2011-2012 Season Highlights

Midwest Scholastic
Rowing Championships

Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13, 2012
Lake Harsha - Cincinnati, OH

The weekend started with a wimper when the boat trailer malfunctioned and the trip to Cincinnati was delayed a few hours as the team bus headed to the boathouse to move boats from one trailer to another. After a slow start, however, everyone was underway and headed East.

Gorgeous weather at beautiful Harsha Lake in Cincinnati, OH provided the perfect backdrop for the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship on Saturday, May 12. Forty-five rowing clubs from 27 different cities and six states competed in this year’s event. The Upper St Clair crew team rowed strong in the morning head-style time trials and were able to send four boats to the afternoon’s semi-final events. The competition proved to be too tough, though, and the Panthers were edged out of the next day’s finals to move on to Nationals. The USC Mens Varsity 4+ was hanging onto the third place finals seed right down to the finish line when the Hampton HS crew came up from behind and edged them out by 0.7 seconds! The strong showing from some of the Novice and JV boats means that the team has a lot to look forward to in upcoming seasons.

Next Saturday, May 19, the Panthers will be competing at the Mercyhurst Prep Invitational Regatta on Presque Isle Bay in Erie, PA.

While it was a beautiful day to be running in the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday, it was an even better day to be rowing for the Upper St Clair High School crew team at the 19th annual Pittsburgh Scholastic Sprints.

The team competed against ten other local area high school crew teams in 1500 meter sprint races on the Allegheny River. While the marathoners were running overhead, these rowers were running with the current underneath the bridges to their own finish line.

A quick current made for fast racing against some very competitive crews and the Panthers were able to medal in four events: bronze in the Mens Novice 4+, the Mens JV 4+, and the Mens JV 8+ events, and silver in the Mens Varsity 4+ event.

Next Friday, the team travels to Cincinnati for the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships.

Medal count: 1 Silver, 3 Bronze! See Photos!

Governor's Cup

Grigg's Reservoir
Columbus, OH
Sunday, April 29th

After an unseasonably warm start to the spring season and getting out on the water in early March, the weather has turned cold agian for our first official race of the season with a few snow flurries as the bus pulled out of Pittsburgh on Saturday morning. Although the weather improved on Sunday, so did the competition as teams from all over Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia rolled into Columbus. Early in the morning on Sunday, with the weather improving, the Womens Varsity 4+ kicked things off in the first race at 7:38 am; with a fourth place finish, just 12 seconds out of advancement to the finals. The mens Varsity four also gave it a valient effort, just 8 seconds out of finals advancement. While everyone competed well, the closest race came just after lunch with the Mens Novice 4+ placing 4th, just 2 seconds behind the 3rd place team from TRRA. All-in-all, it was a great race for USC to stretch their legs and size up the competition for the Spring season.

Columbus, OH
Saturday, Oct. 15th

Traveling to Columbus for the Speakmon Memorial Regatta is one of the highlights of the fall season. We loaded up all of our boats and students on Friday to travel to Grigg's Reservoir, just 15 minutes from the Ohio State University campus to compete against 52 other rowing clubs. Wind was the force to be dealt with as race day brought 20 to 30 mile an hour gusts; creating a challenge for the rowers, but it did not hamper the race schedule. Upper St. Clair put in a great showing with the following notable results:
  • Women's HS Lightweight 4+ placed third for a Bronze Medal!
  • Men's HS 4+ (A) placed 5th overall out of 25 entries, and 1st among the high schools (non-clubs).
  • Men's HS Novice 4+ (A) & (B) boats placed 14th and 24th out of 33 entries!
Click here for a full listing of race results and photos.

For a weekend bonus, two USC Crew alumni were present as Paul Henning (OSU Freshman - Men's Crew) was seen working the launch docks and Victoria Lazur (OSU Freshman - Women's Crew) was seen taking first place in the Collegiate Women's 4+ race as the Coxswain for the OSU Women's Varsity A boat!

USC Crew Takes Gold!

In addition to dealing with a new format for the Head of the Ohio (HOTO) Regatta and 600 boats on the island, the weatherman picked THIS weekend to be right! The forcast was for temperatures in the 40's, and with 80% humidity and 90% chance of rain, feeling like 30's. The 82 teams, representing 82 cities in 14 states, that crowded onto Washington's Landing were treated to classic Pittsburgh weather with a steady rain and dropping temperatures throughout the day. The weather didn't dampen USC's spirits, however, and the team rowed excellent races. Notably:
  • Men's Varsity 4+ snagged a gold medal in the scholastic race, beating out St. John's Jesuit(Toledo), Central Catholic, and Mt. Lebanon.
  • Men's Novice 4+ received a bronze medal; finishing less than 2 seconds behind the second place boat from St. John's Jesuit (Toledo).
  • Men's Novice 8+ pulled a very respectable 4th place; just 3 seconds behind St. John's Jesuit (Toledo) and 9 seconds behind South Niagara

Toledo, OH
Saturday, Sept. 24

The team was once again, graciously hosted in Toledo, OH by the Henning and Stough families, allowing us to enjoy a beautiful evening by the pool after unloading equipment and boats and a good night's sleep before race day. A cooler morning, however, brought a dense fog off of the Maumee River as we struggled to see downtown Toledo on the opposite side of the river from our race vantage point.

Finally, the fog began to lift after a nearly 3 hour regatta delay and the two Upper St. Clair Men's Varsity 8+ boats kicked things off with a 12th place and a 5th place finish. And the 2011-2012 season is ON! A quick lunch got everyone ready for the afternoon as the sun came out and the air warmed up.

In the afternoon, Paul VanRyzin lead a USC Men's 4+ to a 7th place finish (out of 26) with a time of 19:28 for the 6000m course, just a minute off of the first place boat from St. Ignasius, Chicago. Adam Puccetti's Men's 4+ placed a respectable 22nd in that same race. Liz Alther and the USC Women's HS 4+ wrapped up our day of racing with a 25th place finish out of 32. Their finish contradicted how well their shell seemed to glide across the water. All in all, it was a great day of racing, and we're looking forward to some great racing at HOTO and Speakmon.
